Caption

Light micrograph of the human ovum (egg) at the 2 cell stage (occurs about 60 hours after fertilisation). The fertilised ovum (the zygote) undergoes rapid mitotic cell divisions to form a ball of cells (the blastocyst). The individual cells (blastomeres) do not grow between divisions, & therefore decrease in size with successive divisions. In this image, the 2 nuclei (central bodies) are prominent in each daughter cell. Magnification X 1000 at 35mm size.
