Caption

Rat embryo (15.5 days). Close-up of a rat embryo at 15.5 days gestation. The embryo, removed from its mother's uterus, is seen without its embryonic sac and placenta. The developing eye (round) and ear (small slit) are faintly visible on the head (at top). The limbs have started to form (centre and lower right). Internal organs (unseen) would be developing at this stage. The gestation period of rats is 22-24 days with 6-12 young in a litter.
