Ferrofluid. Spikes in a ferrofluid due to the application of a magnetic field. This ferrofluid contains particles of iron oxide, measuring 10 nanometres in size, suspended in a light oil. The iron oxide particles cause the liquid to respond to magnetic fields. Ferrofluids have a number applications in industry. They are used to form liquid seals around spinning drive shafts in hard drives, and in loudspeakers to passively damp the movement of the cone.
