Cosmotron particle accelerator. The Cosmotron at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, New York, was the first proton synchrotron to come into operation, in 1952. The protons were first accelerated to 3 MeV in a Van de Graaf generator & were then injected into the "doughnut" of the main accelerator, where they were raised to an energy of 3 GeV. The Cosmotron ceased operations in 1966. The photo was taken in 1959.
