Light micrograph of a section of normal human skin showing the dermis (turquoise), a thick layer of living tissue consisting of connective tissue, blood vessels, lymph vessels, nerve endings sweat glands, hair follicles, smooth muscle fibres & sebaceous glands. The dense blue/grey layer is the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin, which is continually being renewed as cells are pushed outwards from the germainative layer. The red/brown layer consists of squames or skin scales, dead cells whose cytoplasm has been replaced by keratin, a fibrous protein. Mag: x 40 at 35mm size.
