Light micrograph of a section through the skin of a human finger, showing a Meissner's corpuscle (large, pale, oval-shaped structure, centre). Meissner's corpuscles are small, encapsulated sensory organs located in the upper dermis of the skin, especially that of the fingertips, the soles of the feet and the erogenous zones. They function in the perception of light discriminatory touch. The degree of sensitivity of a particular region of skin depends on the proximity of receptors to one another. Magnification unknown.
