Skin. Illustration showing the components of human skin. The outer epidermis (top) is composed of dead, flattened, cornified cells; the lower living part of the epidermis is coloured pink. The dermis (paler pink), is composed of dense, fibro-elastic tissue threaded with blood vessels. Beneath it is a layer of subcutaneous fat (yellow). The blue coiled structures are sweat glands. Two hair follicles can be seen with their associated sebaceous glands and arrector pili muscles. The oval blue structures are Pacinian corpuscles; sense organs which are responsive to pressure.
