Freckles on the back of a 40 year old woman. Freckles are small flat spots on the skin which develop after repeated exposure to the sun. They are caused by the dark skin pigment melanin. There are two types of freckles, ephelides and lentigines. The former appear during the sunny months and fade during the winter, whilst the latter are normally slightly darker and remain all year round.
