False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a single shaft of human hair. Hair consists largely of keratin, a fibrous protein. The micrograph shows clearly the overlapping keratin plates, or scales, which form the surface of normal human hair & which are thought to reduce hair matting. Magnification: x145 at 35mm size.
