Light micrograph of a section through the human scalp showing some of the numerous hair follicles associated with the head. The round follicles from which the hair shaft grows are surrounded by fat lobules. The granulated orange region of the hair follicle is the broad external root sheath. The root sheath is separated from the connective tissue sheath, the light orange region on the outer perameter, by the glassy membrane. Passing inwards, is the internal root sheath stained dark here, followed by the cuticle, which appears yellow. At the centre is the cortex stained black. Magnification: x15 at 35mm size.
