Light micrograph of normal human skin showing two hair follicles (circular). The hair root, at the centre of each follicle, is surrounded by concentric layers consisting of the inner epithelial root sheath (red), the outer epithelial root sheath (purple) and connective tissue. Beyond this and next to the left follicle is a section through the arrector pili muscle, which makes the hair 'stand on end'. The group of cells bottom centre, is a section through part of the coiled duct of a sweat gland, seen as a series of circular structures with a hollow centre. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
