Skin with hair follicles. Light micrograph of a transverse section through normal human skin showing hair follicles (circular). The rounded hair root, at the centre of each follicle, is surrounded by concentric layers consisting of the inner epithelial root sheath (red), the outer epithelial root sheath (blue) and connective tissue. Outside this are larger red patches, a section through the arrector pili muscle which makes the hairs 'stand on end'. Magnification: x11 at 5x4 inch size.
