Hair follicle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cross-section through a hair follicle below the skin surface. At upper centre is a shaft of hair (green) surrounded by the epidermis (red), the upper layer of skin. The epidermis is surrounded by the dermis, the lower skin layer. Hair is made up of a fibrous protein called keratin. The hair shaft is covered with overlapping keratin scales or plates (as seen) which are thought to prevent hairs from matting together.
