Eyelash hairs. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of eyelash hairs (blue). The surrounding skin surface has cells which are being shed. Hairs grow from follicles in the under- lying layer of skin (the dermis). The portion of the hair protruding from the skin is made up of dead tissue and the protein keratin. Eyelashes prevent foreign bodies from entering the eye. Magnification: x42 at 5x7cm size.
