Eyelash hair. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of eyelash hair. The base of the hair shaft can be seen emerging from the skin of the eyelid. Hairs grow from follicles in the underlying layer of skin (the dermis). The portion of the hair protruding from the skin is made up of dead tissue and the protein keratin.
