Eyelash roots. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the roots of eyelash hairs. Each hair shaft is usually anchored by the root in an individual hair follicle in the surface of the skin around the eye. The hairs are formed of dead cells and the protein keratin. Eyelashes help to protect the eyes by trapping dirt and sweat. Magnification: x360 when printed 10cm wide.
