Hair shaft. Light micrograph of a section through a camel hair. The mammalian hair shaft consists of three layers: the medulla (centre), here containing medullary cells; the cortex (orange), a keratinised, pigmented layer forming the bulk of the hair; and the cuticle (white), a hard, thin layer on the surface of the hair. Magnification x200 at 6x7cm size.
