Dog hair. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of hairs (red) emerging from the skin of a dog. The outer layer of each hair is made up of overlapping scales. These are thought to be important in preventing matting. Hair is made up of dead cells containing the protein keratin, which is provided by the living hair bulb embedded in the skin (not seen). Magnification: x95 at 6x7cm size.
