Prostate gland. Light micrograph of a section through a normal human prostate gland. The prostate is a large gland that surrounds the neck of the bladder in men and produces most of the fluid in semen. It consists of glandular tissue (orange/white) embedded in a matrix of fibro- muscular cells (red). The glandular spaces are lined with columnar epithelial cells that secrete citric acid and hydrolytic enzymes. The secretions are released to mix with the sperm from the testes during ejaculation. The secretions include fibrinolysin, which liquefies coagulated semen in the vagina. Magnification unknown.
