Prostate gland. Coloured light micrograph of a section through a prostate gland. The prostate is a large male gland that surrounds the neck of the bladder and the urethra (the tube that carries both urine and semen out of the body). Numerous excretory ducts (white) are seen, which are lined with epithelial cells (orange). The prostate produces an alkaline secretion that forms part of the seminal fluid. It also produces secretions that keep the lining of the urethra moist. Connective tissue (yellow) can also be seen. Magnification: x60 when printed 10cm wide.
