Light micrograph of a section of human tissue showing white adipocytes, or cells adapted for the storage of fat. Stored fat accumulates in a cell as lipid droplets, which fuse to form a single large droplet, displacing the nucleus to one side & reducing the cytoplasm to a thin rim around the periphery. Adipose tissue is associated with connective tissue and forms a thick layer under the skin, around the buttocks & kidneys. It functions as an insulating layer and as an energy store. Magnification: X 125 at 35mm & X 250 at 6X7cm size.
