Caption

Fat cells. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of human fat cells, or adipocytes, in human skin. Adipocytes together form adipose fat tissue. Stored fat accumulates as lipid droplets in these cells; lipids concentrate and fuse to form a single large droplet, displacing the nucleus to one side and reducing the cytoplasm to a thin rim around the cell periphery. Adipose tissue is associated with connective tissue and forms a thick layer under the skin, and occurs in the buttocks and around the kidneys. It functions as an insulating layer and as an energy store. Magnification: x290 at 35mm size.
