Fat cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of fat cells (orange red) in the human abdomen. They are covered by strands of connective tissue. Fat cells, also known as adipocytes, are composed mostly of lipid deposits and are one of the largest types of human cell. They make up the adipose tissue, a layer of protective, insulating fat that lies just beneath the skin. Magnification: x46 at 6x7cm.
