Connective tissue. Light micrograph of a network of connective tissue. Connective tissue provides structural and metabolic support for tissues and organs. It is very widespread throughout the body. Connective tissue may also give rise to bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments, as well as adipose (fat) tissue, areolar (breast) tissue, and elastic tissue found in the skin, artery walls, and air sacs of the lungs.
