Caption

Fibroblast cell. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a fibroblast cell. The internal structure can be seen, including the rough endoplasmic reticulum (blue). This membrane-bound network is bordered by ribosomes (green flecks), microscopic cell organelles responsible for synthesising proteins. The mitochondria (dark red ovals) which are responsible for energy production in the cell are also seen, as is the nucleus (dark red, centre) which contains the cell's genetic information. Fibroblasts are responsible for the production of the structural protein collagen. Magnification unknown.
