Connective tissue. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of abdominal connective tissue, showing its strands of collagen fibres (brown). Red blood cells (red discs) are seen interspersed between the fibres. Connective tissue is a diverse group of tissues that provides structural support in body tissues and organs. Collagen, a protein, is found in tendons, cartilage, ligaments, skin and bone. Its fibres are inelastic, yet strong. Magnification:x1300 at 6x7cm size.
