Female skeleton. Coloured gamma scans of a healthy female skeleton seen from the front (left) and back. Gamma scans involve injecting a radioactive isotope into the body. The gamma radiation given off by the isotope is detected and converted into an image. Gamma scans can be used to detect bone tumours.
