Abdomen scan. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan showing an axial section of a healthy human abdomen. The liver (1) dominates the image. It is the largest organ in the body and has roles in digestion, detoxification of blood and general metabolic synthesis and breakdown. The spleen (3) is important in defending against infection. The stomach (2), the spine (5) and two blood vessels, the aorta (4) and the inferior vena cava (6), are also seen. MRI scanning uses radio waves and a powerful magnetic field to image body tissues.
