Magnetic fields. Computer model of head with cut- away showing natural magnetic field lines. Yellow areas are regions of higher magnetic field strength; blue to green areas have lower field strength. The human body has a natural magnetism. This is because spinning hydrogen nuclei in water behave like tiny magnets, and the human body is mostly made of water. The magnetism is both internal and external, relative to the type of tissue in the body. Understanding body magnetism is useful for the technique of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) which relies on adjusting the magnetic fields of the body to obtain body images.
