Female anatomy. Computer artwork of a female body showing her skeleton and the digestive system. The oesophagus leads down to the stomach (pink), which is partially obscured by the liver (orange, left). In the stomach the food is churned together with stomach acids and digestive enzymes, forming a liquid mixture called chyme. This passes from the stomach to the small intestines (light brown), which extract nutrients, before the semi-digested food passes to the large intestine (brown), where water is absorbed. The faeces then reaches the rectum (lower centre), where it can be excreted.
