Infertility. Artwork depicting infertility, with prospective parents sitting up in bed and an empty cot in the foreground. Infertility is the inability to have children, and the problem can be from the male, female or both. Male problems include low sperm count (where very few sperm are present in the semen), and impotence (failure to achieve an erection). Female problems include anovulation (failure to ovulate) which can be caused by stress or hormonal disorders, and hostile cervical mucus, which kills sperm before it can enter the uterus. Treatment depends on the cause of the problem, but often involves in-vitro fertilisation or hormone therapy.
