Anthropocene. Conceptual artwork of stone carved with images of a human head and symbols showing the impact of humans on the environment. These include images of cogs, tyre tracks, numbers, silicon chips and the evolution of hominids. Since the late 18th century, the activities of humans have had a significant global impact on the Earth's climate and ecosystem. The most damaging impact has been the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. In 2000, the Dutch Nobel prize winning chemist Paul J. Crutzen suggested that this recent period in the Earth's history should be labelled the Anthropocene.
