Identical twins. Infant identical twins, one year old girls, being held by a proud father. Genetically identical (monozygotic) twins arise from a single fertilised egg of the mother which splits into two cells, to produce two offspring. Although one twin is often much bigger than the other at birth, they are always of the same sex and look remarkably alike.
