Protecting bathers against UV light. A group of school children sitting in the water at a beach. All of the children are wearing t-shirts, covering their skin against the ravages of excessive ultraviolet light. Exposure to high levels of UV light may lead to sunburn and more dangerous conditions such as skin cancer. In many countries, notably Australia and New Zealand, large-scale public education programmes are in place to warn of the dangers of over-exposure to harsh, mid-day sunlight. These fears are stoked by the annual depletion of the ozone layer in the far southern hemisphere - ozone absorbs much of the high-energy UV light from the Sun. Photographed in Australia.
