Around his waist is a safety harness that attaches to the safety rope during a climb. This type of harness is known as a sit harness. It comprises a waist belt and two loops that fit around the legs. The leg loops are connected to the front of the belt by a loop (orange). Several carabiners are attached to the side of the harness (left). A carabiner is a metal loop with a screwed gate used to connect the climber to the rope. He is also wearing shoes specially designed to support his feet and aid his grip on the rock.
