Caption

Herschel's 20-foot telescope. Illustration of the 20-foot (6 metre) reflecting telescope built by astronomer William Herschel (1738-1822). Herschel built his own telescopes, laboriously grinding the lenses himself to near perfection. This was his most successful instrument; with it he discovered two new satellites of Uranus - Titania and Oberon.
