17th century navigation. Historical artwork of a navigator using a device for obtaining one's position using the stars. Measurement of the stars could be used to obtain an accurate measurement of latitude (how far north or south one was). It wasn't until the development of accurate timepieces by Harrison in the 18th century that longitude could be measured with similar accuracy.
