Mount Haleakala Observatory. View of Haleakala Observatory, Maui, Hawaii, USA. There are 5 white concrete domes & 3 metal domes visible which house optical telescopes. There are also satellite dishes on masts & aerial masts among the buildings of the observatory. The conditions on Mount Haleakala are ideal for viewing the stars. The observatory is freed from light & air pollution found in urban areas. The dry atmosphere (10% of sea level water vapour) & the height (40% of the atmosphere is below the observatory) makes conditions ideal for infra-red telescopy. There is little scattering of light, so faint structures can be studied.
