The old Royal Greenwich Observatory. This was the national astronomical observatory of the UK, founded 1675 at Greenwich, East London, to provide navigational information for sailors. It was founded by King Charles II. The eminence of its work resulted in Greenwich Time and the Greenwich Meridian being adopted as international standards of reference in 1884. After World War II the site of the Royal Observatory was moved to Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex; in 1990 it was transferred to Cambridge.
