Optical telescope. Researcher checking the optical telescope at the Capodimonte observatory, Naples, Italy. This is a 40-centimetre-diameter reflector telescope. The image is captured by a CCD camera (charge-coupled device) equipped with several different filters. Various pieces of equipment are mounted on the barrel of the telescope, including a choice of eyepieces and the VAMOS (Velocity and Magnetic Observations of the Sun) instrument (white). A computer is used to move and point the telescope, and to control the movement of its dome. The Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte (OAC) was inaugurated in 1819. The VAMOS project started in 1999.
