Night sky over Antarctica. Astronomer working with a telescope at night at Concordia Station, a research base in Antarctica. The base was completed in 2005. It is over 1000 kilometres inland, high on the Antarctic plateau at an altitude of 3233 metres, at the location called Dome C. It is a permanent, all-year research station, the third to be built in Antarctica, and is jointly operated and run by France and Italy. The unpolluted and clear skies provide good viewing conditions for astronomers, although the night-time temperatures fall far below freezing. On this night (6 September 2005), the temperature reached minus 68 degrees Celsius.
