Maui Space Surveillance System telescope domes at the Haleakala High Altitude Observatory in Haleakala National Park, Maui, Hawaii, USA (Aug 2006). Haleakala High Altitude Observatory, operated by the University of Hawaii, is located on top of the volcano in Haleakala National Park on Maui. This picture was taken from the Red Hill overlook and shows the northwest side of the facility that is occupied by the Air Force Maui Space Surveillance Complex. Two larger white domes are part of the Maui Space Surveillance System (MSSS). The eastern (left) dome houses a 1.6-m Cassegrain telescope used for research and development purposes. The western (right) dome houses a twin telescope mount with 1.2-m optics for routine space surveillance. The smaller domes contain the Beam Director/Tracker and the Laser Beam Director used for laser ranging experiments.
