The desolate landscape at the 4200m summit of the dormant Mauna Kea volcano in Hawaii, one of the world's best sites for astronomical observations. At right are the small silver dome of the Caltech Sub-millimetre Observatory & the larger building of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope.
