Caption

The first commercial solid-state sodium laser guidestar being used at the Gemini North Telescope atop Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The beam is from a 14 Watt single beacon system installed on the centre section of the Gemini North telescope. The laser guidestar will be used in conjunction with the telescope's adaptive optics system to enable astronomers to observe at or near the diffraction limit of the 8-meter telescope.
