Very Large Telescope. Housings of three of the four telescopes at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Cerro Paranal in Chile. The VLT comprises four 8.2 metre mirror telescopes (Antu, Kueyen, Melipal and Yepun). The images from each are combined by interferometry, giving an image equal to that obtained by one 16 metre diameter mirror. At sunset, vents are opened on the sides of the buildings allow air into the housings, which helps to keep the air temperature inside and outside equal. This reduces air turbulence inside the buildings, improving the stability of the telescopes and the quality of their images.
