The open dome (left) of the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). It is situated at 4200 metres on the top of the dormant volcano Mauna Kea in Hawaii. UKIRT is a 3.8 metre telescope entirely devoted to infrared astronomy and is equipped with a wide range of scientific instruments. Mauna Kea, thanks to its high altitude, has a very stable and dry atmosphere making it one of the best sites in the world for astronomical observations. The dome at right houses the 2.2m telescope of the University of Hawaii.
