United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT, centre). This telescope is situated at 4200 metres altitude on the summit of the dormant volcano Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The silver dome houses a 3.8 metre telescope entirely devoted to infrared astronomy and is equipped with a wide range of scientific instruments. Mauna Kea's high altitude and stable, dry atmosphere make it one of the world's best sites for astronomical observations. To the left is the 2.2 metre University of Hawaii telescope, and to the right a smaller telescope.
