UKIRT at sunrise. The United Kingdom Infrared Telescope is located on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA. The shadow of the photographer is seen on the side of the building. The telescope has a 3.8 metre mirror, which is used solely for IR astronomy. This photograph was taken in 1984. Since then, ventilation grilles have been added to the dome to allow faster equalisation of air temperature. This is important as differences between the inside and outside temperatures can lead to turbulence around the mirror, reducing image quality.
