The telescope is one of a number all over the United States used for the technique of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), which enables radio astronomers to simulate a giant radio telescope dish as wide as a continent; this in turn gives the astronomers exceptional resolut- ion at radio wavelengths.
