Display panels & dials in the control room of the radio observatory at Jodrell Bank, near Manchester, England. The panel at left gives information on the MERLIN network of radio telescopes operated from Jodrell Bank. The two rows of dials at right give the sidereal time & universal time. Sidereal time is measured by reference to the rotation of Earth with respect to the stars; the sidereal day is 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4.091 seconds long. Universal time is the basis of all civil timekeeping & is equivalent to Greenwich Mean Time.
